2014 Northern Regional
Saturday, April 26, 2014
Sacramento County Office of Education
10474 Mather Boulevard
Mather, CA 95655
The CATESOL 2014 Northern Regional Conference offered hands-on demonstrations and workshops, theory/research-based presentations, rap sessions for each teaching level, interest group sessions, research paper presentations and publisher exhibits. Participants gained insights in teaching methodologies and practices, perused new teaching material, shared ideas with each other and networked with colleagues.
There was a “Common Core for Dummies” strand because Common Core is not just a buzz word but a program that affects every level of ELLs and their teachers, from elementary though adult. While we might think that it is “not our bag,” ELLs will be soon arriving at college, for example, with more developed critical thinking skills, affecting how we teach composition and abstract vocabulary, and our adult learners will be facing new homework challenges with their children and teens. To help educate us all, we had on board Dr. Karen Cadiero-Kaplan, a past president of CATESOL and now Director of the English Learner Support Division of the California Department of Education, Keira Kirby, Curriculum Developer, and our very own Board member, Judith O’Loughlin, Education Consultant.
